It’s October and I’m hitting you with a spooky book rec! Today we’re going to talk about Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire. Part of the Ghost Roads series, this book follows Rose Marshall, who at first glance may seem like your typical teenage girl, except…she’s been dead since 1952 after being run off the road by Bobby Cross, a man who sold his soul for immortality. This book gives the vibe of the Monster of the Week magical girl tv genre. Think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in book form.
While not an outright horror book, Sparrow Hill Road presents plenty of dread and haunts to get you right into the vibes of spooky month. As for characters, Rose gives the impression that, had she not died as a teenager, she would have been your typical badass protagonist in her time.
I absolutely absorbed this series and can’t recommend it enough for people that love the monster of the week genre or ghosty vibes.
But since it’s not very scary, it’s 4/10 spookies
