With an atmosphere is thick, unsettling, and dripping with unease, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the kind of book that crawls under your skin and refuses to leave.
A stand-out to me was the fantastic use of imagery. There was so much incredible symbolism that it felt like every description was pulling double duty. I especially appreciated the use of the ouroboros that worked very well with foreshadowing the later reveals.
The story leans hard into being psychological horror, making both the protagonist and the reader second-guess reality. There was a constant tension of never quite knowing what was real, what was imagined, or what could be trusted, and that helped to crank the creep factor up to eleven. And when the big twists finally hit, you’re left questioning even those. Can you trust the ending? Or is the book still toying with you?
I finished this one with this heavy unease still clinging to me, and honestly, that’s the mark of a great horror read. I can’t recommend this enough if you want something that haunts you long after you put down the book.
