Book Review: Delilah Green Doesn’t Care – Hallmark with Spice

Delilah Green Doesn’t Care by Ashley Herring Blake feels like watching a sapphic Hallmark movie, but more human and with a sharper edge. The titular main character fits the cookie-cutter “big city girl” trope. She’s a workaholic, career-driven photographer in the big city who returns to her small hometown for a big event outside her fast-paced life, only to find love and a slower, more fulfilling pace of life. All of the characters are messy, flawed, and deeply relatable in a way that makes their growth feel earned rather than scripted. I especially loved watching Delilah’s arc. She’s extremely guarded and uses her humor as a defense, which really connected with me. Her later vulnerability worked in a way that felt genuine and satisfying.

That said, I do wish I had known going in that this wasn’t quite a Hallmark movie. I went in completely blind, so the graphic scenes genuinely caught me off guard, and while they make sense within the story, I wasn’t expecting them. That’s not a knock on the author at ALL; this book is unapologetically adult, and it should be. This is 100% on me for assuming it would lean fully into cozy romcom territory. I’ve said in other reviews that I prefer if spicy scenes are earned in some way and this book DEFINITELY earns them.

Overall, it’s heartfelt, witty, and a little steamier than I anticipated. If you’re looking for a queer romance that balances emotional depth with romance tropes in fresh ways, this one is worth picking up.
