Book Review: Bookshops & Bonedust – Embracing Joy

A book about reading books? What’s not to love?

Bookshops & Bonedust, the cozy prequel to Legends & Lattes captures everything that makes Travis Baldree’s world so endearing. We got to see Viv in her early adventuring days, including reckless behavior and thinking she’s invincible, but after quickly learning that she needs to take time away from the front to heal from an injury, gets to discover the type of person she wants to be. What unfolds is a gentle, heartfelt story about slowing down, savoring small joys, and learning that sometimes rest is just as important as action.

I especially loved watching Viv’s relationship with books bloom and ultimately a help her forge a new path forward. She goes from not even wanting to give a book a second thought to craving the next one on the shelf. It’s an earnest celebration of reading itself, wrapped in warmth and tenderness.

Add to that the themes of embracing joy, vulnerability, and found family? This one is an instant favorite for me. And yes, if you want to ugly cry like I did, there’s more of that too.
