Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match – The Implication

Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne is funny, absurd, and deeply weird; in both good and bad ways. It’s kind of a monster-fucking book, but also… not quite. A romantic spin on Frankenstein that leans hard into the witty, it follows Angelika, Victor Frankenstein’s younger sister, as she grows tired of waiting for love and decides to make her own match.

With her brother’s help, she LITERALLY builds her perfect man. From handpicked features to a custom… member, Angelika’s creation is equal parts romantic fantasy and ethical nightmare. Where Victor looked upon his creation and saw an abomination, Angelika sees a hottie with potential.

Victor and Lizzie absolutely steal the show. Every time they’re on the page, the tone shifts into something delightfully chaotic. But there’s no escaping the problematic nature of the central romance. Angelika’s creation, Will, isn’t just a man brought to life; he’s built to love her. There is little acknowledgement that he was not only created, but custom-MADE to be her paramour. It kind of reminds me of that “what is my purpose?” scene in Rick & Morty. He’s ONLY here to love her and (maybe) be loved by her.

If you can turn your brain off to the implications, it’s a witty, fast-paced romp with undeniable charm. But if power imbalances in romance make you squirm, this one might not be for you.
